A female emu named Enzo made a brief escape from an animal rescue sanctuary in eastern Ontario and has gained local fame. The incident occurred in Almonte, Ontario, a town situated 50 kilometers southwest of Ottawa. Enzo resides at Gagné Homestead and Rescue, located off Highway 29 on the outskirts of the town.

Described as possessing the grace of a prehistoric runway model and the speed of pure chaos, Enzo embarked on a solo adventure, exploring the town like a curious tourist. Although Enzo’s emu companion Blue also attempted to flee their enclosure, Blue was quickly contained on the property.

Emus, which are the largest birds native to Australia, can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Siobhan O’Keefe, a local resident near Almonte, captured a photo of Enzo near a residential area, surprising passersby.

The owner of the sanctuary, Jeff Gagné, expressed regret for any concern caused by the unexpected escape and thanked the community for their efforts in safely returning Enzo home. Gagné assured the public that they were addressing the issue to prevent future incidents.

Interestingly, the escape occurred on Groundhog Day, prompting a playful twist on the tradition where Enzo’s sighting was humorously linked to the prediction of prolonged winter. Following media coverage, Gagné and Enzo traveled to Ottawa for an interview with CBC’s All In A Day host Alan Neal.

During the interview, Enzo and Blue enjoyed grapes in a trailer parked in front of the Supreme Court of Canada, with Neal marveling at the unique experience. The escapade and the eventual details surrounding Enzo’s escapade were discussed in the interview, which aired on 91.5 FM and the CBC Listen app.

Enzo’s unexpected adventure has sparked interest in the community, with locals following the emu’s escapade and subsequent media appearances with keen fascination.
