Fans experience intense stress and excitement while watching sports games, triggering physical responses similar to real stress, according to medical experts. Referred to as “fanxiety,” this phenomenon is evident in social media videos capturing fans’ reactions during crucial moments in various sports. The brain processes sensory information from watching games, preparing the body for emotional reactions due to the fan’s investment in the outcome, explained Greg Wells, a scientist at Sick Kids Hospital.

The release of endorphins occurs when fans feel joy from a successful play, while emotional distress follows a disappointing outcome. Instances like a tense pitcher versus batter duel can lead to increased heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure as the body gears up for a fight or flight response, triggered by hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

Studies reveal that spectators during high-stakes games exhibit physical responses akin to moderate workouts, with those present at live events experiencing even more significant physiological changes. While heightened heart rates and blood pressures during games are generally harmless for most individuals, those with underlying heart conditions should adhere to prescribed treatments to prevent potential risks. Recognizing symptoms of chest pain or heart palpitations and seeking immediate medical attention is crucial for at-risk individuals.

Implementing stress-reducing techniques such as box breathing and visualization of calming scenarios can help mitigate cardiovascular strain during intense sports viewing. Staying mindful of one’s physical reactions and pacing oneself during emotionally charged moments is essential for maintaining overall well-being.
