Abel Mwansa was known for his infectious smile, a trait that his father cherished and believed held healing power. Tragically, the 12-year-old was one of the eight victims of a devastating mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on February 10, marking one of Canada’s deadliest mass shootings, with six children among the victims.

Since the tragic event, Abel’s father has been reminiscing about his son, describing him as ambitious, inquisitive, and deeply compassionate. The Mwansa family had relocated to Canada from Zambia in March 2023, with Abel being born in Kitwe, Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, in May 2013. His father was overjoyed at Abel’s birth, so much so that he bestowed his own name upon his son.

Abel’s father fondly recalls his son’s diverse interests and talents, from excelling in soccer and skating to his profound fascination with science. Abel’s insatiable curiosity led him to conduct various experiments, often leaving mysterious concoctions in the family refrigerator. His father humorously enforced a rule about not consuming any unlabelled liquids in the fridge, all part of Abel’s scientific endeavors.

The Government of Zambia expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the young promising life. Abel’s father had contemplated homeschooling him to spend more time together, but Abel vehemently opposed the idea, valuing his friendships and school environment.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Abel’s classmates and community members have shared touching stories about his bravery during the shooting. Witnesses recounted how Abel selflessly tried to protect others, earning him the title of a hero in his final moments.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Abel’s father finds solace in the positive memories his son created, knowing that Abel’s warmth and kindness touched many lives. Abel is survived by his parents, younger sister, and eight-month-old brother.
