“Kyiv Restores Water and Heating After Russian Strikes”

Kyiv’s water and heating systems were restored following a brief shutdown due to severe cold in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday. Engineers worked urgently to stabilize a power grid under strain from a series of Russian strikes during the week. The attacks on Friday led to significant civilian casualties and left millions of Ukrainians without vital services like electricity, heating, and water, creating a critical humanitarian situation, according to Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary General.

Since the invasion on February 24, 2022, Russia has been consistently targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, resulting in daily blackouts in major cities. With temperatures already below freezing and expected to drop further, the impact on heat and water systems has become increasingly alarming.

The city administration announced that Ukrenergo, the state grid operator, had instructed the shutdown of Kyiv’s power system, affecting water, heating, and electrified public transport. However, within an hour, engineers rectified the immediate issue caused by prior Russian strikes, and power was gradually being restored in parts of Kyiv.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the centralized heating system, which supplies hot water through pipes to homes, was being reactivated, with full heat supply expected to be reinstated on Saturday. Nonetheless, the power situation in the capital remained challenging due to extensive grid damage and heightened electricity usage for heating purposes in the cold weather.

In a retaliatory move, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region reported that 600,000 residents were without essential services after a Ukrainian missile strike. Efforts were underway to restore electricity, heating, and water in the region, although the situation was described as extremely difficult.

A Ukrainian drone strike caused a fire at an oil depot in Russia’s Volgograd region, with regional authorities indicating the possibility of evacuating nearby residents due to the incident. No immediate casualties were reported.

Ukraine’s strategic targeting of Russian energy facilities aims to disrupt Moscow’s oil export revenue, crucial for sustaining its invasion efforts. On the other hand, Russia’s objective is to destabilize Ukraine’s power grid, depriving civilians of basic necessities like heat and water in what Kyiv labels as a deliberate “weaponization of winter.”

The recent attacks occurred following a barrage of drones and missiles launched by Russia into Ukraine, resulting in casualties in Kyiv. Additionally, Russia deployed a powerful hypersonic missile near the Polish border, seen as a coercive tactic by Kyiv’s European allies to deter support for Ukraine.
