The federal government of Canada is surpassing its internal greenhouse gas reduction objectives, with a significant decrease of 42.5% from 2005 levels in carbon pollution from its operations. This achievement goes beyond Ottawa’s target of a 40% reduction, resulting in a reduction of 1.024 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to eliminating pollution from over 238,000 gas-powered passenger cars annually.
The government aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, striving to eliminate carbon pollution as much as possible while offsetting any remaining emissions with carbon removal techniques or technology. Launched in 2017, the initiative is spearheaded by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and covers various aspects such as buildings, vehicles, and government services, including safety and security fleets like warships and aircraft.
While the government has not disclosed independent verification of its emissions reductions, it has approved 25 new projects aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. These projects, supported by the Greening Government Fund, include initiatives like recycling excess energy from scientific equipment and adopting low-carbon fuel options for the military. The fund has allocated over $80 million to more than 130 projects to reduce emissions from government operations.
President of the Treasury Board, Shafqat Ali, emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting a cleaner future through practical solutions. Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin highlighted the importance of these projects in reducing pollution, saving energy, and fostering a greener environment for Canadians.
Although the federal government is making strides in emissions reduction, the country as a whole is projected to fall short of its 2030 climate target, currently on track for a 21% reduction below 2005 levels by the end of the decade. Implementing additional climate policies could potentially increase this reduction to 28%, according to a recent progress report.
Overall, the Canadian government’s efforts in reducing emissions within its operations showcase a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, setting an example for other entities to adopt greener practices.
