The Canadian federal privacy commissioner has determined that the creation of sexual deepfakes by Grok AI chatbot, associated with Elon Musk, has breached privacy regulations. It was found that Grok’s AI image generation tool was introduced without sufficient protective measures and failed to adequately address privacy concerns. The commissioner initiated an inquiry in January to investigate the proliferation of sexualized deepfakes produced by Grok and disseminated on the X social media platform. The investigation revealed that Grok was utilized to produce millions of sexualized deepfakes. The inquiry focused on assessing the companies’ compliance with privacy laws and whether they acquired proper authorization to gather, utilize, and disclose personal data for creating deepfakes, including explicit content. The circulation of these images sparked international criticism, leading to the U.K., the European Union, and California launching their own investigations.
