The candidates vying for the NDP leadership have completed their registrations and fees and are gearing up for the final party-organized debate in British Columbia. This upcoming debate will be conducted in English, following a previous debate in November that was intended to be in French but largely shifted to English due to the candidates’ bilingual limitations.

While the contenders align on fundamental social democratic principles like supporting labor unions, the debate offers them a platform to highlight their individuality. The selection process will utilize a ranked ballot system, with the new leader set to be unveiled at a leadership convention in Winnipeg on March 29.

Let’s delve into the proposals presented by the five candidates:

Rob Ashton, a union leader representing dockworkers, advocates for a national public transit strategy backed by a dedicated annual fund of $2 billion to subsidize local bus and train fares. He also emphasizes expanding national transportation infrastructure to create jobs and reduce emissions, proposing enhanced rail service to the expanded Port of Churchill in Manitoba for increased product exports.

Tanille Johnston, the first Indigenous woman seeking the NDP leadership, prioritizes reconciliation by urging increased federal investment in enhancing infrastructure in First Nations communities, including all-weather roads, high-speed broadband, and airports. Johnston champions a “guaranteed livable basic income” program scaled to taxable income levels, funded by raising the corporate tax rate to 22% and equalizing capital gains with income tax rates.

Avi Lewis, a leading fundraiser among the candidates, focuses on tax reform, advocating for a wealth tax on individuals with substantial assets and ending government subsidies to the fossil fuel sector. He also pledges to eliminate private consultants hired by the government and proposes regulations on artificial intelligence (AI) use.

Heather McPherson, the sole sitting MP in the race, emphasizes party rebuilding and fielding more competitive candidates. She aims to bolster regional campaign infrastructure, expedite candidate nominations, and enhance communication between the central party and candidates. McPherson’s environmental agenda includes prioritizing green projects and advocating for long-term funding for disaster response infrastructure and adherence to federal pollution pricing.

Tony McQuail, an Ontario organic farmer dubbed as a “green progressive,” stresses the need for sustainability in addressing climate change. His platform includes promoting regenerative farming practices and advocating for affordable, communal, and sustainable housing. McQuail proposes the adoption of a universal basic income and replacing the current electoral system with proportional representation to amplify his sustainability initiatives.
