Victoria’s Rifflandia music festival has been called off indefinitely, according to organizers. The annual event, known for its multimillion-dollar showcase of music and arts in Victoria each September since 2008, will not make a return. In a detailed announcement on its official website, the festival expressed regret over the cancellation of this year’s edition, citing insurmountable challenges.

Vanessa Leong, the chief operating officer of Rifflandia, revealed to CBC News that the festival had faced financial struggles throughout its 15-year history, with increasing production costs rendering it unsustainable. Leong highlighted the evolving festival landscape, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, where escalating expenses for insurance, infrastructure, and talent have posed significant obstacles for organizers.

Securing a suitable venue for this year proved to be a major hurdle for Rifflandia, as neither the Matullia Lands in Rock Bay nor the Royal Athletic Park were available. Moreover, the festival’s reliance on ticket sales from about 7,500 daily attendees was insufficient to cover the extensive production costs, given the relatively small population of Greater Victoria, estimated at 450,000 residents.

The cancellation of Rifflandia adds to a growing list of abandoned festivals in the capital city’s cultural scene. Various organizations have been forced to cancel or scale back events due to the financial strain, echoing a trend of rising costs affecting the industry. Earlier this year, the Esquimalt Buccaneer Days parade was scrapped, along with other community events like the Oak Bay Tea Party parade and the Lights of Wonder holiday attraction.

Reflecting on the festival’s legacy, the Songhees Nation, whose traditional territory includes the Matullia Lands, paid tribute to Rifflandia on social media. The Nation commended the festival for its genuine partnership and collaborative approach, setting a positive example for engaging with Indigenous communities in a respectful and inclusive manner.

Despite the festival’s cancellation, Rifflandia’s organizers remain committed to hosting events elsewhere. Leong mentioned recent ventures such as an art street festival in Paris and the organization of sports, philanthropic initiatives, and film events. Embracing new opportunities globally, Rifflandia aims to continue its cultural impact beyond the Victoria music scene.
