Nikita Kokal often finds herself questioning whether artificial intelligence was used to create dating app profiles when she matches with someone. She scans for indicators such as em dashes, three-item lists, and robotic-sounding content. Kokal believes that relying on AI to shape communication in dating, at any stage, is unacceptable, preferring authenticity over automated interactions.

She criticizes the trend of using AI-generated conversation starters, describing them as inauthentic and unproductive. Despite her reservations, the prevalence of AI assistance in dating apps is undeniable. Christopher Dietzel, a researcher at Concordia University, is investigating the integration of AI technology in dating platforms, analyzing how it is marketed and its potential to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in relationships.

Major dating apps like Hinge and Tinder have incorporated AI features. Hinge suggests profile changes to users, while Tinder recommends potential matches based on profile data and app usage. In some regions, Tinder even accesses users’ camera rolls with permission for additional insights. Grindr, a hookup app for gay men, offers a premium service called Edge, providing chat summaries and user profile insights for a monthly fee.

Dietzel acknowledges the positive impact AI can have on individuals with disabilities, making dating experiences more accessible and enjoyable. However, he remains cautious about the reliance on AI for profile creation and conversations, questioning the ultimate goal of fostering meaningful relationships through these automated interactions.

Treena Orchard, an anthropology professor, expresses skepticism towards dating apps and their increasing reliance on AI to address issues like “swipe fatigue.” She believes that the emphasis on technological solutions may overlook the fundamental flaws in the app design, hindering users’ ability to establish genuine connections. Orchard suggests that the industry’s eagerness to adopt AI as a quick fix highlights a deeper need for reevaluation and human-centered design approaches.

While some individuals like Kokal have adapted to appreciate unconventional writing styles on dating apps, questioning the impact of widespread AI integration on human connection and the essence of being human remains pertinent. The allure of technology as a solution may overshadow the deeper questions about its implications for interpersonal relationships and the authentic pursuit of love and connection.
