A tragic incident unfolded as a skier lost their life in an avalanche incident east of Revelstoke, B.C. The skier was part of a guided group when they were caught in a slide, leading to the fatal outcome. The avalanche was triggered as the skier, who was skiing down a slope, became engulfed by the snowslide. The location of the incident was in the Selkirk Mountains, about 19 kilometers southeast of Revelstoke, specifically in the Akolkolex River drainage region on the southeast side of a mountain at an elevation of 2,150 meters.
Upon being buried by the avalanche, the skier was rescued by the Selkirk Tangiers team, who initiated CPR before transporting the individual to the Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke. Despite efforts, the skier did not survive, highlighting the dangers present in backcountry activities.
Authorities emphasized the inherent risks of backcountry activities, even for experienced individuals, as they reflected on the unfortunate event. Fortunately, no other guests or guides were harmed during the incident. Counselling support has been provided to those affected by the tragedy, underscoring the company’s commitment to their guests’ well-being.
The company’s general manager stressed the family-like bond with their guests, extending condolences to the lost skier’s loved ones and all affected by the incident. He highlighted the rigorous training undergone by their guides to mitigate risks for themselves and their guests in mountainous terrain.
The fatal avalanche incident marks the second such tragedy in B.C. in 2026, following the recent death of a snowmobiler near Fernie under similar circumstances. The heightened avalanche risk, particularly in the Monashee and Selkirk mountains, has been emphasized by Avalanche Canada, with a considerable danger rating indicating the potential for natural and human-triggered avalanches.
