Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko has been crowned the WTA’s newcomer of the year. The WTA recently revealed its annual award winners, with the 19-year-old rising star hailing from Toronto. Mboko made a remarkable leap in the rankings, climbing from beyond the top 300 to cracking the top 20 following a stellar 2025 season.

Her standout achievement came in August at the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Montreal, where she clinched the title by defeating several Grand Slam singles champions, including the formidable Naomi Osaka in the final. Adding to her accolades, Mboko also secured a WTA title in Hong Kong in November, triumphed in four consecutive ITF World Tennis Tour events earlier in the year, and reached the third round at the French Open.

Recognized as one of the International Tennis Federation’s promising future stars and recently welcomed by Prime Minister Mark Carney at his office in Parliament Hill, Mboko’s rapid ascent in the tennis world has been nothing short of impressive.
