Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield was remanded without bail during his initial court appearance on Wednesday, following his voluntary surrender to authorities to address accusations of child sexual abuse. The charges relate to claims of inappropriate physical contact with a minor while directing a television series in New Mexico.
Appearing via a video link from jail, where he was incarcerated on Tuesday, Busfield refrained from making any statements during the brief court session and was not required to enter a plea. A detention hearing to decide on his jail status will be arranged within five working days.
Scheduled for January 29, a preliminary hearing has been set in response to the arrest warrant issued by Albuquerque police last week. Busfield faces two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse, as detailed in a criminal complaint linked to his work on the show “The Cleaning Lady.”
Married to actress Melissa Gilbert, known for roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” Busfield has vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as falsehoods in a video message shared prior to surrendering.
Prosecutors are pushing for Busfield’s continued detention until trial, citing a history of sexual misconduct, misuse of authority, and grooming behavior spanning two decades. They emphasized concerns raised by witnesses about potential retaliation and professional repercussions.
An official motion submitted on Wednesday outlined the prosecution’s stance, highlighting the challenges in holding offenders accountable when they possess authority and influence. The motion argued that given Busfield’s track record of flouting boundaries and rules, no release conditions could adequately safeguard victims or the community.
A judge will ultimately decide on the prosecution’s request, with a detention hearing pending scheduling. Additionally, prosecutors criticized Busfield for providing a video to TMZ, suggesting a focus on personal narrative control over compliance with legal proceedings.
The criminal complaint detailed instances where Busfield allegedly touched a child on multiple occasions when he was seven and eight years old, leading the child to fear repercussions due to Busfield’s position as director. The child’s twin also reported being touched but refrained from speaking up to avoid trouble.
The mother of the twins reported the abuse to Child Protective Services, stating it occurred between November 2022 and spring 2024. Busfield denied the allegations in a police interview, attributing them to a vendetta by the boys’ mother for their removal from the series. Warner Bros.’ independent investigation failed to substantiate the claims, according to Busfield’s attorney, although prosecutors argued that crucial witnesses were not interviewed.
The investigation was initiated in November 2024 following a report from the University of New Mexico Hospital, where the boys’ parents sought assistance on legal advice.
