Kenny Chaplin is determined to recapture his Guinness World Record for the most trees planted by an individual in a 24-hour period. Initially achieving this feat in 2001 by planting 15,170 trees near Prince Albert, Sask., he held onto the title for two decades until a competitor surpassed his record.

Chaplin is eager to reclaim his title by transforming a flat field near Buena Vista, Sask., located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Regina, into a budding forest within the timeframe of 8 a.m. CST on June 30 to 8 a.m. CST on July 1. Expressing his excitement, Chaplin shared with CBC Saskatchewan his anticipation for the challenge of planting 24,000 trees in 24 hours, emphasizing the personal satisfaction of walking through his own forest.

Reflecting on the growth of the trees from his initial record-setting endeavor, Chaplin envisions the new jack pine seedlings he plants this year flourishing into a mature forest that will benefit future generations. He envisions the communal forest in Buena Vista becoming a cherished space for residents to enjoy outdoor activities such as walking their dogs and spending time with their families.

Acknowledging the current record held by Antoine Moses, who planted 23,060 trees in La Crete, Alberta, in July 2021, Chaplin noted the competitive nature of modern tree planting efforts. For his upcoming attempt, Chaplin will be supported by his twin brother and a team of volunteers who will witness the planting process. Independent professionals, including a forester, arborist, and botanist, will provide witness statements for Guinness, and multiple cameras will capture the planting activities to ensure adherence to guidelines.

David Tonken, president of Let’s Plant Trees Ltd., praised Chaplin’s record attempt as a significant undertaking that highlights the importance of tree planting and the dedication of individuals who work towards rehabilitating forests annually.
