Nova Scotia-born actor Mike Smith, famous for his role as Bubbles on the enduring TV sitcom Trailer Park Boys, has pleaded innocent to a single charge of sexual assault relating to an alleged incident in 2017.

Smith’s legal representative, Stan MacDonald, stood in for him in a Dartmouth, N.S., courtroom, informing the judge that Smith had directed him to enter a not guilty plea.

The actor’s trial in provincial court in Dartmouth is set for three days in early October.

Smith was charged on October 2, 2025, but court records do not disclose the specifics of the accusations, which have yet to be examined in court.

However, the documents indicate that Smith has been mandated not to contact or visit the home, workplace, or school of the female accuser, whose identity is safeguarded by a court-ordered injunction.

Crown attorney Bryson McDonald mentioned that the number of witnesses expected to testify at the trial was uncertain.

Both prosecution and defense lawyers are anticipated to convene for a pretrial conference in May.

Aged 53 and hailing from near New Glasgow, N.S., Smith is also a writer and producer on the show, primarily filmed in the Halifax region and near Truro, N.S., to the north of the port city.

Last year, Trailer Park Boys Inc., a Nova Scotia-based company with Smith listed as one of three directors at the time, acknowledged being aware of the allegations and treating them seriously. The other directors are John Paul Tremblay, playing Julian, and Robert Wells, portraying Ricky.

The company verified that Smith had withdrawn from his position at Trailer Park Boys Inc.

In August, the company declared the conclusion of filming for the 13th season, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the series.

The mockumentary is situated in the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park, where Bubbles, Julian, and Ricky frequently engage in ill-fated get-rich-quick ventures.

The original show, conceived by Mike Clattenburg, ran for seven seasons before spawning four full-length movies, two spinoff series, and a holiday special. Trailer Park Boys Inc. disclosed in July its plan to launch a streaming service to host its content.

Smith has been honored with a Canadian Comedy Award and two Gemini Awards for his contributions to the show. He also served as the guitarist for rock band Sandbox in the mid-1990s, earning a nomination for Best New Group at the Juno Awards in 1996.
