The European Union and the Mercosur bloc of South American countries have officially signed a significant free trade agreement after more than 25 years of challenging negotiations to enhance commercial connections amidst global trade tensions. The signing took place in Asunción, Paraguay, marking a substantial triumph for the EU during a time of changing trade dynamics with the United States and China.

The agreement underscores the EU’s strategic move to strengthen ties in a region abundant in resources and increasingly contested by major global players. It also highlights South America’s commitment to maintaining diverse trade relations despite assertions of dominance in the Western Hemisphere by U.S. President Donald Trump.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the crucial geopolitical implications of the agreement, stressing the preference for fair trade over tariffs and advocating for long-term partnerships over isolation. The ceremony was attended by the presidents of Mercosur members Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, along with the foreign minister of Brazil, the largest economy in the trading bloc.

The accord, which eliminates over 90% of tariffs, creates one of the largest free trade zones globally, uniting a market of over 700 million consumers representing a quarter of the global GDP. The deal, driven by South American agricultural producers and European industrial sectors seeking new markets, faces its final hurdle of ratification by the European Parliament. Concerns from protectionist groups on both sides may pose challenges to the agreement’s implementation, particularly regarding potential impacts on European farmers and the influx of South American agricultural goods.

Despite the gradual reduction of tariffs over the next decade and a half, certain measures such as strict quotas on products like beef aim to address European farmers’ apprehensions. Italy’s support for the agreement was influenced by these quotas and EU subsidies, while France remains hesitant towards the deal.
