B.C. Premier David Eby arrived in India for a six-day trade mission with the goal of maximizing meetings and generating interest in British Columbia’s resources. This objective seemed challenging less than a year ago due to strained Canada-India relations.

Eby expressed satisfaction with the mission’s progress in Mumbai, highlighting the significant interest in British Columbia’s mining sector, particularly for critical minerals such as nickel and copper. Both countries are seeking to diversify trade partnerships in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and Canada’s sovereignty concerns.

Despite the complexities arising from the strained relations, Eby remains optimistic about engaging in economic discussions with trade partners amid disagreements. Indian firms showed keen interest in B.C.’s liquefied natural gas projects and expressed enthusiasm for acquiring raw materials to facilitate their transition to clean energy, emphasizing the need for minerals like nickel, cobalt, lithium, and copper.

The premier noted the strong economic confidence among Indian executives and India’s robust economic growth, positioning the country as an attractive investment destination. The visit coincided with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s presence in Delhi and upcoming European Union leaders’ visit for India’s Republic Day celebrations, hinting at potential trade collaborations.

The Canada-India rift, triggered by allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of a Canadian Sikh activist, has seen recent efforts to mend relations, including visits from Ontario’s trade minister and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. The relationship deteriorated in 2023 following accusations against India, leading to diplomatic expulsions before a gradual reconciliation.

The thaw in Canada-India relations gained momentum with Mark Carney’s election as prime minister, culminating in a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit. The recent focus on trade agreements and pragmatic actions reflects a shift influenced by global economic dynamics, including responses to Trump’s policies.

Eby’s trade mission faced protests from activists in Victoria, underlining the importance of addressing transnational issues while safeguarding economic interests. The evolving trade strategies of Canada and India indicate a shift towards flexible international cooperation, mirroring India’s foreign policy approach and signaling a new era of engagement for Canada in a changing global landscape.
