Odhran McLaughlin faced a challenging task of corralling 15,000 crabs that escaped from an overturned truck on a highway in County Donegal, Ireland, during the night. The truck, carrying $97,000 worth of brown crabs bound for Portugal, veered off the road, spilling the live cargo onto the highway.
McLaughlin, the owner of McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery in Burnfoot, was initially unaware of the situation until he arrived at the scene and found the crabs scuttling all over the place, attempting to reach the sea nearby. With expertise in car parts rather than crustaceans, McLaughlin sought help from local communities, including crab fishermen, a veterinarian, and numerous volunteers from Burnfoot, Greencastle, and Moville.
Around 80 individuals, including men, women, and children, worked tirelessly for about 18 hours to capture the runaway crabs, place them in sandbags, and return them to their container using a crane. Despite some casualties among the crabs, McLaughlin reported that they managed to recover 95% of the escaped crustaceans. However, due to the ordeal, the crabs were deemed unsuitable for consumption and will not be sent to restaurants as originally intended.
While the cause of the accident remains unclear, McLaughlin speculated that unfamiliarity with the rural roads of Donegal might have played a role, particularly with large European drivers who are accustomed to motorways and highways. Reflecting on the incident, McLaughlin expressed his relief at not having to deal with crabs again anytime soon.
