Maritime Launch Services Ltd., a company aiming to construct Canada’s inaugural commercial rocket launch pad in Nova Scotia, has finalized an agreement with a German aerospace company, Isar Aerospace. This partnership envisions potential orbital launches by 2028 at the Nova Scotia location near Canso, N.S., situated on the Eastern Shore.

Isar Aerospace plans to establish a specialized facility for its Spectrum rocket, a two-stage rocket designed for transporting small and medium-sized satellites into space. The German company has already set up its initial launch site in Norway and has established a new Canadian subsidiary, Isar Aerospace Canada Inc.

According to Alexandre Dalloneau, Isar’s vice-president of mission and launch operations, the capacity for launching is critical in today’s defense and intelligence landscape, as accessing data from space remains a significant challenge for many nations. He emphasized that Isar aims to address this bottleneck by providing end-to-end launch capability to sovereign nations, with Canada being the next target on their roadmap.

Canada has historically relied on the United States for launching its space projects due to its lack of independent launch capabilities. Recognizing the importance of space launches, especially in defense, Ottawa has highlighted it as a key sovereign capability in its defense industrial strategy. The recently announced 2025 budget has allocated $183 million over the next three years to establish space launch capabilities.

In March, the Canadian government inked a 10-year, $200 million lease agreement with Maritime Launch, enabling Canada to conduct satellite launches autonomously without external assistance. This initiative aligns with the country’s strategic interests, as approximately 20% of the Canadian economy relies on satellite technology for various sectors like banking and telecommunications.

Maritime Launch’s project, Spaceport Nova Scotia, aims to serve commercial, civil, and defense clients by providing launch infrastructure. It is anticipated to become Canada’s premier commercial launch pad once operational later this year. Isar’s collaboration will grant them access to the launch site, an operations center, and additional services.

Stephen Matier, CEO of Maritime Launch, disclosed that Isar is set to invest around $100 million as a tenant to prepare its launch pad. Construction is slated to commence this year, with plans for space launches by 2028 and a target of up to 40 launches annually at the site by 2029. The ten-year agreement entails Isar paying Maritime Launch $3.75 million US per fiscal quarter once the contract is fully operational.

During a NATO defense industry summit in Turkey, Matier sealed the deal with Isar and highlighted the allocation of launch pads among Isar, the federal government, and Montreal-based aerospace company Reaction Dynamics, with discussions ongoing with potential clients for the remaining pad. Additionally, Canada’s recent initiative to join NATO Starlift, a project facilitating space launch capabilities among allies, underscores the collaborative efforts among companies from NATO-allied nations.

Matier emphasized the significance of NATO Starlift in promoting cooperation between Europe and North America in space activities, emphasizing the joint efforts in rocket launches, satellite operations, and payload deployments. The Isar partnership exemplifies the spirit of collaboration within NATO-allied countries, fostering advancements in space technology and security.
