The Canadian Embassy in the Dominican Republic has confirmed the involvement of Canadian citizens in a tourist bus accident that took place in the Caribbean nation on Sunday evening. According to a statement shared on social media by the embassy, consular assistance is being provided to those affected. However, specific details regarding the number of Canadians on the bus and their current condition have not been disclosed.

A spokesperson from WestJet informed CBC News that passengers from Sunwing were onboard the bus at the time of the incident, which resulted in unspecified casualties. The spokesperson stated that the bus, operated by NexusTours, was transporting guests from Punta Cana International Airport to their hotels when the traffic accident occurred on March 1, 2026.

Expressing condolences, WestJet mentioned that they are closely collaborating with NexusTours, local authorities, and are actively assisting affected individuals and those requiring support during this challenging period.

Reports from local media in the Dominican Republic indicate that the crash near Cumayasa, approximately 100 kilometers west of Punta Cana, led to two deaths and left at least 19 people injured. Authorities have confirmed that the deceased individuals were foreign nationals, although their citizenship has not been officially disclosed.

Global Affairs Canada was contacted by The Canadian Press for a statement, but the department stated that no further details could be provided at the moment. The Canadian Embassy in the Dominican Republic has advised any Canadians in need of assistance to contact the emergency watch and response center.
