Interim NDP Leader Don Davies criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney for allegedly disregarding voter preferences to secure a majority in the House of Commons. Davies emphasized the importance of the NDP’s role in advocating for Canadians and condemned MPs switching parties as undermining democracy.

Addressing the recent departure of Nunavut MP Lori Idlout to the Liberals, Davies expressed disappointment and highlighted the need for MPs to seek voter approval before changing affiliations. Despite the shrinking NDP caucus, Davies refrained from speculating on Idlout’s motivations or the impact on the party’s future.

With Idlout’s defection, the Liberals now hold 170 seats, approaching a potential majority in the 343-seat House of Commons pending three upcoming byelections. Davies underscored the principle of electoral decisions being made by voters rather than through undisclosed agreements in Ottawa.

In the Westminster parliamentary system, Canadians vote for local representatives, who then determine the governing party. The distinction between majority and minority governments is based on seat distribution in the House of Commons. The system allows elected officials to switch parties or become Independents without restrictions on the government’s composition.

Remaining NDP MPs, standing alongside Davies, expressed disappointment over Idlout’s departure and reaffirmed their commitment to continue the party’s fight. Despite the setback, the NDP members vowed to persevere and carry on with their mission.

Carney welcomed Idlout at a caucus meeting, praising her constituency work and representation of Nunavut. Idlout cited multiple factors contributing to her decision to switch parties, emphasizing the warm reception she received upon joining the Liberals.

In response to questions about the defection’s impact on morale, NDP MPs emphasized their determination to push forward and uphold the party’s values. Idlout’s previous reluctance to join the Liberals shifted, leading to her decision to cross the floor with the support of her new party.
