Ghanaians residing in Prince George are joyfully celebrating the City of Prince George’s gesture of raising the flag of Ghana for the second consecutive year in honor of the country’s Independence Day. The Prince George Ghana Association members express that since the initial flag-raising in 2025, it has facilitated connections among Ghanaians in the city, leading them to plan the establishment of a cultural center.
According to Eddie Ameh, the President of the Prince George Ghana Association, the flag-raising event was followed by a successful summer gathering and an end-of-year party, drawing significant community participation. The association is now actively fundraising to acquire or construct a building for their envisioned community center, which would also serve as a gathering place for individuals from other African nations residing in Prince George.
Richie Sai-Appiah, a member of the society, emphasized the unifying effect of the flag-raising event, stating that it brought the entire community together. The envisioned community center aims to blend Canadian and Ghanaian cultures, fostering unity and mutual enjoyment of diverse cultural traditions. Jacob Madjitey, who moved to Prince George from Ghana in 1992, highlighted the substantial growth of the Ghanaian population in the city over the past three decades.
Madjitey emphasized the significance of the city’s acknowledgment of the Ghanaian community and their contributions, expressing gratitude for the recognition through the flag-raising ceremony on Independence Day. He believes that the establishment of a community center would not only benefit future generations of Ghanaians but also allow the broader Prince George community to engage in Ghanaian customs and practices.
Eddie Ameh underscored the importance of a community center in tapping into Madjitey’s wealth of cultural experience and expertise, particularly in drumming traditions. The association intends to allocate funds raised from cultural activities throughout the year towards the realization of their community center initiative.
