Shania Twain, a prominent Canadian musician, had doubts about her music career initially, unlike her mother who always believed in her potential. Twain’s musical journey commenced at the age of eight when her mother recognized her talent and saw it as a way out of their impoverished circumstances in Timmins. Despite her mother’s aspirations for her to follow in the footsteps of Tanya Tucker, Twain was hesitant about pursuing a career in music, feeling it might not be a realistic path compared to her peers heading to college for more conventional professions.
Eventually, Twain ventured to Toronto for university to study computer programming, a field she perceived as offering more stability than music. While supporting herself by working at McDonald’s during the day, she continued to perform at bars at night. However, tragedy struck at 22 when her parents passed away in a car accident, leading her to return to Timmins to care for her younger siblings. To make ends meet, she took a singing job at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ont., where she utilized her free time to write and record her own music.
During this period, Twain recorded a demo tape, which caught the attention of Nashville’s Mercury Records. Reflecting on her journey, she credits her mother for instilling in her the ambition to go global with her music career. Despite not being able to share her success with her late mother, Twain’s new album serves as a tribute to her, highlighting the pivotal role her mother played in shaping her into the artist she is today.
