A scarcity of estrogen patches in Alberta is causing concern among women who rely on them for managing menopause symptoms. The drug product database of Health Canada revealed shortages of Estradot and Estradiol Derm patches, both manufactured by Sandoz Canada.

Diane Reid, a 59-year-old Edmonton resident, shared her struggles in finding the right treatment for her menopausal symptoms. Despite initially finding relief with an Estradot patch, she is now facing difficulties due to the supply issues.

Dr. Shafeena Premji, a Calgary-based family physician specializing in menopause care, highlighted the challenges faced by patients and pharmacies in finding suitable alternatives during these shortages. While Climara patches by Bayer are also available in Canada, no shortages have been reported for that brand.

Sandoz Canada attributed the supply problems to fluctuating demand levels and pledged to increase production by over 20% this year. The shortages are expected to ease gradually, with some expected to end in March and April.

Health Canada emphasized the importance of hormone replacement therapies and urged patients affected by the shortages to consult their healthcare providers for alternatives. The Alberta government is actively monitoring the situation, ensuring that some strengths of Estradot patches and other estrogen products remain accessible.

Dr. Fiona Mattatal, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Calgary, expressed concerns about the challenges in providing menopausal healthcare amid the ongoing shortages. She noted the increasing awareness of menopause and the growing demand for hormone therapy.

As the situation unfolds, patients are advised to collaborate with their healthcare providers and pharmacists to explore suitable alternatives. Compounding pharmacies can customize gels or creams to meet individual needs, ensuring that patients have viable options available.
