In Tantramar, N.B., a converted garage in Keagan Hawthorne’s backyard now serves as the operating base for Gaspereau Press, a renowned Canadian literary publisher. This temporary space is where Hawthorne, the new owner of Gaspereau Press, is currently managing operations. The company, known for its boutique publishing and handcrafted books, was previously located in Kentville, N.S., and has maintained a small-scale, local approach since its establishment in 1997.

Gaspereau Press, under the stewardship of Andrew Steeves and Gary Dunfield, prided itself on upholding its original mission of staying small and community-focused. Despite the occasional challenges, such as the surge in demand following the Giller Prize win for “The Sentimentalists” in 2010, the company remains committed to its roots. Rather than expanding in response to success, Gaspereau Press values staying true to its local roots and handmade book production.

Hawthorne, also a poet published by Gaspereau Press, likens the meticulous bookmaking process to crafting furniture, emphasizing the quality and care put into each publication. As the sole full-time employee at the moment, Hawthorne plans to transition Gaspereau Press into a warehouse setting by winter, allowing for some aspects of production to be outsourced while maintaining the personalized touch that defines the company.

Sackville, part of the town of Tantramar in New Brunswick, provides an ideal setting for Gaspereau Press with its vibrant arts and academic community. The town’s affordability and supportive environment offer a conducive space for artistic endeavors, making it a fitting location for a company dedicated to artisanal book publishing. Despite upcoming changes and potential outsourcing, Gaspereau Press remains committed to the handmade process, ensuring that every book produced retains its unique, personal touch.
