Roblox is experiencing a significant decline in its financial performance compared to previous years. The popular gaming platform has witnessed a market value drop of about $97.5 billion Cdn over the past year, according to stock market data. The company attributes this decline to shifts in user preferences regarding game choices and challenges encountered in appealing to an older audience. However, experts suggest that additional factors may be contributing to the situation.
Aaron Langille, who serves as the game design and simulation program coordinator at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont., remarked, “I think there’s actually a lot of things going on.” He believes that Roblox, as a platform, is maturing and may have made decisions that did not yield the desired results.
The stock price of Roblox Corporation has plummeted by approximately 70 per cent compared to the same period last year, falling from $129.63 US ($180.67 Cdn) to $36.96 US ($51.51 Cdn). This decline was accentuated following an earnings call where company executives reported revenue figures below expectations.
For those unfamiliar with Roblox, it is a gaming and creation platform where users can engage with games developed by other users. Launched in 2006, the platform has now amassed 151.5 million daily users and 3.5 million game developers, as per company data. A variety of game genres are available on Roblox, including racing games, obstacle courses, first-person shooters, platformers, and board games, predominantly designed for multiplayer interactions.
The majority of Roblox gamers are younger individuals. The company introduced identity and age verification measures earlier this year, revealing that among verified daily active users, 35 per cent were under 13 years old and 38 per cent were aged 13 to 17, indicating that more than half of the active player base comprises non-adults.
CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen Chopra acknowledged to investors that Roblox had not met expectations in terms of user spending this year, particularly among users under 13. They attributed this shortfall to alterations in Roblox’s game recommendation algorithm and the shift in popularity towards games that are less profitable compared to the previous year’s successes.
Safety concerns surrounding Roblox have been raised as the platform incorporates text and voice communication features, prompting efforts to attract older gamers while addressing worries expressed by governments, watchdogs, and experts regarding the safety of young users online.
The RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre reported over 1,000 incidents involving Roblox between 2024 and 2025. Tragically, in February 2025, a 16-year-old from Vancouver, Penelope Sokolowski, took her own life after engaging with a violent cult called 764 through online messaging on Roblox. The group has been identified as a terrorist entity by Public Safety Canada.
Roblox recently reached an agreement with the state of Nevada to enhance online safety measures for young users and allocate over $10 million US towards education and safety initiatives. Yulia Nevskaya, an assistant professor of marketing at Queen’s University, pointed out that safety concerns, coupled with new age and account verification rules perceived as intrusive by some users, may have contributed to a loss in the user base and impacted game developers’ willingness to create content.
Despite the recent financial setbacks, Baszucki and Chopra highlighted positive developments during the earnings call, mentioning enhanced user retention due to algorithm changes, growth in international markets like Japan and India, and a broader range of games being played by users. Baszucki remains optimistic about the platform’s future, emphasizing the company’s mission and long-term growth strategies.
Cristiano Politowski, an assistant professor of computer science at Ontario Tech University, commended Roblox for having full control over its platform and managing it effectively, suggesting that the current adjustments causing short-term stock price declines are part of a strategic long-term plan.
In conclusion, while Roblox faces challenges amidst changing player preferences and safety concerns, the company’s commitment to adaptation and growth remains central to its enduring success in the gaming industry.
