The Canadian government has allocated $100 million to support the country’s steel industry through a new initiative. This program will cover half of the transportation expenses for Canadian-made steel moved within the country by ship or rail.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon revealed the Commodities Sectoral Support Program in Hamilton as a direct reaction to U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper, and related products, ranging from 10 to 50 percent.
MacKinnon emphasized the critical national significance of the steel industry, particularly in Hamilton, stating that the government is committed to ensuring the industry’s resilience and prosperity.
Under the program, which commences today, eligible companies will receive a 50 percent rebate on the transportation costs of certified Canadian steel transported interprovincially. The initiative is set to run for a year or until the $100 million funding limit is reached, with a maximum rebate of $50 million per producer.
MacKinnon hinted at a possible extension if the program exhausts its budget before the designated period, highlighting the government’s flexibility in supporting the steel sector.
In response to the announcement, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre proposed extending the gas and diesel excise tax holiday and abolishing the industrial carbon tax to lower steel transportation costs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s objective of strengthening the Canadian economy by facilitating cost-effective domestic product shipping aligns with the launch of this rebate program. Industry leaders, such as Ron Bedard from ArcelorMittal Dofasco, anticipate significant positive effects on the steel sector nationwide.
Jason Card of the Chamber of Marine Commerce expressed satisfaction with the program, emphasizing its role in enhancing supply chains, boosting the national economy, and supporting the steel industry’s growth through improved transportation facilitation.
