Iran’s supreme leader issued a stern warning on Sunday, cautioning that any potential attack by the United States could ignite a “regional war” in the Middle East. This statement comes amid escalating tensions, with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening military action against the Islamic Republic in response to its handling of recent nationwide protests.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, aged 86, made his most direct threat to date, as the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and other American warships are stationed in the Arabian Sea following Tehran’s violent crackdown on the demonstrations. While it remains uncertain if Trump will resort to the use of force, he has indicated an interest in negotiations with Iran and highlighted concerns regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

Describing the nationwide protests as a “coup,” Khamenei’s comments have solidified the government’s stance, with tens of thousands reportedly detained since the protests began, primarily driven by economic grievances. The possibility of sedition charges, punishable by death in Iran, raises apprehensions about potential mass executions, a scenario that Trump has deemed unacceptable.

Iran had scheduled a live-fire military exercise in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key passageway for global oil trade. The U.S. military’s Central Command had cautioned against any threats to American vessels or aircraft during the drill, emphasizing the importance of maintaining commercial traffic flow.

Speaking at his Tehran compound during Iran’s commemoration of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Khamenei accused the U.S. of coveting Iran’s natural resources, asserting that any aggression from the U.S. would lead to a wider conflict. He emphasized Iran’s defensive stance, affirming a willingness to retaliate against any hostile actions.

Furthermore, Khamenei condemned the protests as an attempted coup, pointing to attacks on essential institutions and symbols of authority. The crackdown on dissent has led to a significant number of detentions, with reports suggesting over 49,500 individuals have been arrested, although precise figures are challenging to verify due to internet restrictions imposed by Iranian authorities.

In response to the European Union’s designation of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group, Iran’s parliament speaker declared that all EU militaries would now be considered terrorist entities. This retaliatory move, largely symbolic, reflects Iran’s ongoing tensions with Western nations.

As concerns mount over a potential U.S. strike on Iran, Trump has outlined conditions that would trigger military action, including violence against peaceful demonstrators or widespread executions of detainees. Amid discussions on Iran’s nuclear activities, Trump emphasized the importance of securing a satisfactory agreement to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, indicating ongoing dialogue with Iranian officials.
