Veteran journalist and current host of “Metro Morning” radio show, David Common, is set to take over as the new host of “CBC Morning Live,” the public broadcaster revealed on Thursday. This announcement coincides with Heather Hiscox’s final broadcast on the show, marking the end of her two-decade tenure as the host.

In a pre-announcement interview, Common outlined his vision for the program, aiming to tackle the evolving television landscape and combat the growing sense of apathy towards news with a mix of serious journalism and light-hearted content. Common emphasized the importance of engaging viewers without overwhelming them with heavy news.

Originally from Winnipeg and having shifted to Toronto at a young age, Common initially aspired to become a nurse before a serendipitous encounter with Peter Mansbridge altered his career path. His journalistic journey began in 1999 at CBC’s London bureau, leading to assignments in various cities across Canada and internationally, including Paris and New York City.

Common’s extensive experience includes reporting from over 90 countries and hosting roles on programs such as “World Report” and “Marketplace.” Currently hosting “Metro Morning,” Common is preparing to transition to his new role on “Morning Live,” acknowledging the challenges and excitement that come with the shift back to video journalism.

Mark Ross, Managing Editor of CBC News Network, highlighted the upcoming evolution of “Morning Live,” emphasizing a focus on incorporating Common’s strengths in audience engagement and creating a more personal and authentic show experience. Hiscox, the outgoing host, and her team received accolades, including Canadian Screen Awards and recognition from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Common’s tenure on “Metro Morning” will conclude on January 16, 2026, before he assumes his position as the full-time host of “Morning Live” on February 2. In the interim, various anchors will fill in on “Morning Live” while the search for Common’s replacement on “Metro Morning” continues.
