A student from Rivers, Manitoba, expressed shock over the recent arrest in their small community, where authorities uncovered a plot by two teenagers from Nova Scotia and Manitoba to carry out simultaneous school attacks. Cole Lelond, a Grade 11 student at Rivers Collegiate, remarked on the unexpected nature of such events in their tight-knit town of under 1,000 residents.
The Bridgewater Police in Nova Scotia were alerted by Interpol and the FBI about online conversations between a 15-year-old from their town and a 14-year-old in Manitoba. The teenagers were discussing plans to target Park View Education Centre and Rivers Collegiate, with the latter having fewer than 150 students in grades 7-12.
The Manitoba RCMP also became aware of the situation through Interpol, leading to the arrest of the teen from Rivers who was actively plotting harm towards other students at Rivers Collegiate. The arrest took place on a school bus near Highway 250, where the teenager was found to be unarmed, and his electronic devices were confiscated.
Authorities emphasized that the arrest was made as a precautionary measure, as there was no immediate threat perceived on the day of the arrest. The 14-year-old has been charged with uttering threats, with potential additional charges pending further investigation.
Following the incident, Rivers Collegiate and the local community have been providing support to students and staff members. Officials are encouraging families to check in with each other and offering assistance to those affected by the news. Residents, like Renee Favron, whose child attends elementary school, have been processing the gravity of the situation and appreciating the swift resolution by law enforcement.
While the incident has left many in the community feeling unsettled, there is a sense of relief that prompt action was taken to prevent any harm. The community is coming together to address concerns and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
