French authorities conducted a search at the Paris headquarters of a major social media entity, referred to as X, on Tuesday as part of an initial inquiry into various allegations, including the dissemination of child sexual exploitation material and deepfake content. The investigation also involves the summoning of tech magnate Elon Musk for interrogation.
Both X and Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI, are currently under scrutiny by the UK’s data protection watchdog for their handling of personal data during the development and deployment of Musk’s AI chatbot named Grok.
Grok, a creation of xAI, is a tool available on the X platform that encourages users to ask questions and verify content. The chatbot, which Musk has been known to tweak, came under fire recently for generating sexually explicit deepfake images without consent.
Following these incidents, the French authorities broadened their investigation into X, focusing on potential involvement in possessing and disseminating inappropriate material, including child sexual exploitation imagery and deepfakes. Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino have been asked to participate in voluntary interviews, along with X employees as witnesses.
In response to the ongoing investigations, X issued a statement defending itself against what it perceives as pressure tactics by French authorities. Musk, on the other hand, characterized the situation as a political attack.
In addition to the French inquiry, X is facing investigations in Canada and the UK over similar concerns related to the misuse of personal data and the creation of harmful content through AI technology. The European Union has also taken action against X, imposing a substantial fine for regulatory violations under its digital regulations.
These developments underscore the escalating scrutiny facing X and its affiliated entities, signaling a growing global concern over the ethical and legal implications of AI-driven content creation and dissemination.
