A man facing charges for the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members in Washington, D.C., last year has been indicted with four additional counts of terrorism. The new indictment, revealed on Wednesday, brings the total charges to nine, including hate crimes, with some carrying a potential sentence of death or life imprisonment, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

The accused, Elias Rodriguez, 31, allegedly opened fire at individuals leaving an event organized by the American Jewish Committee, a group advocating against antisemitism and in support of Israel. Reportedly, he fired around 20 shots from a semi-automatic handgun while shouting “Free Palestine.”

Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, both employees of the Israeli Embassy, were tragically killed in the incident. Rodriguez’s lawyers have not yet issued any comments regarding the case.

The FBI revealed that Rodriguez had written and shared a manifesto attempting to rationalize his actions and incite others to engage in political violence. The shooting, condemned globally, occurred amidst heightened tensions in the U.S., including student demonstrations related to the conflict in Gaza.

The conflict in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Israeli sources reported over 1,200 fatalities among Israelis and foreign nationals, while more than 470 Israeli soldiers lost their lives during the ground operation in Gaza. Meanwhile, Gaza health authorities documented the deaths of over 70,000 Palestinians since the conflict began.
