Sixteen seasoned players from the victorious team that secured gold in Beijing will lead the Canadian women’s ice hockey squad at the upcoming Olympics in Italy. The team will be spearheaded by their captain, Marie-Philip Poulin, who holds the record for the most Olympic goals in hockey, surpassing all male and female players.
Poulin is aiming to clinch her fifth Olympic medal in her fifth appearance at the Games, a feat only achieved by two other hockey legends: Canadians Hayley Wickenheiser and Jayna Hefford. Expressing her gratitude, Poulin stated during the roster unveiling at the Canadian Olympic Committee headquarters in Toronto that it is a tremendous honor to don the maple leaf jersey and participate in her fifth Olympic Games, a dream she never thought possible as a young girl.
Joining Poulin are several forwards from the 2022 team, including Sarah Fillier, Laura Stacey, Emma Maltais, Sarah Nurse, Blayre Turnbull, Emily Clark, Natalie Spooner, and Brianne Jenner. Jenner and Spooner, both competing in their fourth Olympics, have previously secured gold in 2014 and 2022.
The team will see seven players making their Olympic debut in Italy, such as Daryl Watts, Kristin O’Neill, Julia Gosling, and Jennifer Gardiner. Notably, Poulin has outscored everyone since the launch of the PWHL in 2024, while O’Neill has established herself as a formidable faceoff specialist and a challenging opponent on the ice.
In defense, the 2022 blue line members will return, featuring Renata Fast, Erin Ambrose, Jocelyne Larocque, Ella Shelton, and Claire Thompson. Additionally, Sophie Jaques and Kati Tabin will make their Olympic debut. Ann-Renée Desbiens is set to lead in goal, accompanied by Emerance Maschmeyer and Kayle Osborne.
The Canadian team selection process involved thorough evaluations of performances in the PWHL and Rivalry Series games, with players like Watts, Jaques, and Tabin excelling and earning spots on the national team.
While Chloe Primerano, Micah Zandee-Hart, and Nicole Gosling were among the final cuts on defense, the team was finalized after careful consideration and evaluation. The Canadian team’s roster reflects a diverse mix of talent and experience, with all 23 players competing in the PWHL.
Canadian GM Gina Kingsbury expressed confidence in the selected group and their dedication to representing Canada with pride and passion. The team’s preparation was conducted through training camps in Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, in contrast to the previous centralization approach.
Canada’s journey at the Olympics will commence on Feb. 5 against Finland, with Group A also including the United States, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. The gold-medal showdown is scheduled for Feb. 19, with Canada aiming to add to its five Olympic gold medals in women’s hockey since 1998.
