Renowned musician Elton John expressed his outrage in London’s High Court over claims that his landline phones were allegedly bugged by the Daily Mail, deeming the actions as a breach of basic human decency. The singer, famous for hits like “Rocket Man” and “Your Song,” is pursuing legal action against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail, alongside his spouse David Furnish, Prince Harry, and four others for purported privacy infringements.
Associated Newspapers refutes the accusations of phone hacking and other illicit activities, asserting that their stories were sourced from publicly available information or legitimate channels, such as social connections within celebrity circles. The publisher dismissed the allegations as baseless attacks.
During the court proceedings, Elton John, appearing via video link sporting a blue shirt and green jacket, disclosed that he was made aware of the alleged misconduct by the Daily Mail through his close friend, actress Elizabeth Hurley, who is also involved in the legal case. Hurley was reportedly informed by a private investigator that Elton John’s landline phones had been compromised while she was staying with him after the birth of her child.
The credibility of the evidence provided by the private investigator has become a key point of contention in the trial, as the investigator initially supported the claimants but later retracted his statement, raising doubts about its authenticity. Elton John, a music icon with a career spanning six decades and over 300 million records sold, expressed his indignation upon learning about the phone hacking, emphasizing his lack of ownership of a mobile phone and the violation of his privacy through the intrusion into his landline communications.
The singer condemned the intrusion as a severe breach and expressed his frustration at having to attend the court session remotely due to vision impairments. Elton John reiterated his determination to confront unfair treatment by the British press, especially in cases of perceived injustice.
In response to questioning by Associated’s lawyer Catrin Evans regarding published articles between 2002 and 2015, Elton John defended his friends’ integrity, stating that they do not engage with the press, which has preserved their friendships. He criticized the focus on trivial details rather than addressing the significant grievances against Associated Newspapers.
Elton John and David Furnish raised concerns about a specific 2010 article revealing details about their surrogacy journey, including obtaining their son’s birth certificate before the couple themselves.
