Canadians are preparing for significant increases in prices due to anticipated counter-tariffs, affecting a wide range of products such as American aluminum, toilet paper, furniture, and more. The impact will also extend to the semi-trailers used to transport these goods across the country.
Ocean Trailer, the primary retailer of semi-trailers in Western Canada, has a pending $45 million order for 600 trailers from U.S. manufacturers. With a 25% Canadian counter-tariff on trailers set to come into effect, the company is expediting the process to get as many trailers across the border before the deadline.
Mack Keay, the Chief Operating Officer of Ocean Trailer, explained that the additional 25% cost is higher than their profit margin per trailer, necessitating passing on the cost to customers. The Canadian government’s dollar-for-dollar countermeasures are aimed at $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods in response to recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
Industry stakeholders, including the Manitoba Trucking Association, express concerns over the impact of the counter-tariffs. Most semi-trailers in Canada originate from the U.S., and businesses are rushing to import goods before the increased tariffs take effect.
Different types of semi-trailers, including dry vans and refrigerated vans, are commonly used in Canada for various cargo shipments. The potential added costs from counter-tariffs are substantial, with the average trailer cost expected to rise from $75,000 to around $95,000.
Despite the challenges, Canadian manufacturers lack the immediate capacity to meet the increased demand for trailers following the counter-tariffs. The industry faces uncertainties as the cost implications trickle down to consumer goods and shipping operations.
The impact of the tariff war on the trucking sector could lead to bankruptcies if the situation persists for an extended period. Industry experts emphasize the need for strategic planning and potential shifts in business models to navigate the evolving trade landscape.
