Danièle Sauvageau has been a key figure in shaping the landscape of Canadian sports, particularly in Quebec, where she is synonymous with the sport of hockey. Marie-Philip Poulin, the captain of the Montréal Victoire and the national women’s team, acknowledges Sauvageau’s significant impact on both female and male hockey at various levels.

Originally from Deux-Montagnes, Quebec, Sauvageau, who was once prohibited from joining an organized hockey team due to her gender, is now widely recognized for her contributions to the growth of the sport. Her most notable achievement came in 2002 when she led Team Canada to its first hockey gold in 50 years at the Salt Lake City Olympics.

Soon, Sauvageau will be honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder, joining a prestigious group that includes notable figures like NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and former coaches Scotty Bowman and Pat Burns. Notably, she will be the first woman to receive this recognition.

Known for her unwavering dedication to the sport, Sauvageau has earned respect and admiration from those she has worked with, including Poulin. Poulin’s longstanding professional relationship with Sauvageau dates back almost two decades, with Sauvageau supporting Poulin through various stages of her career.

Aside from her coaching achievements, Sauvageau’s influence extends beyond the ice rink. She has been a trailblazer in breaking barriers for women in hockey, becoming the first woman to coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and founding the Université de Montréal Carabins women’s hockey program.
