However, experts note that Iran has not significantly advanced its nuclear program since the attacks. According to Joseph Rodgers, deputy director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), there is minimal scientific activity at the sites, indicating no substantial progress in nuclear-related work.
New satellite imagery from Planet Labs PBC reveals the construction of roofs over damaged buildings at the Isfahan and Natanz facilities, marking the first visible activity at these sites following the military strikes. The Natanz site, known for uranium enrichment activities, has seen the installation of a panel roof over the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant’s anti-drone cage, possibly to shield ongoing operations from view during the salvaging process.
Spencer Faragasso, a senior fellow at the Institute for Science and International Security, suggests that Iran is likely searching for surviving materials, including highly enriched uranium, to potentially restore its enrichment capabilities. At the second site near Isfahan, increased vehicle activity near tunnel entrances indicates ongoing salvage efforts, with a focus on preserving certain structures for potential future use, possibly related to centrifuge manufacturing.
Despite the reconstruction efforts, experts believe that Iran’s nuclear program has been significantly impeded by the attacks, with the facilities facing severe setbacks. Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., a senior fellow at CSIS, highlights the extensive damage suffered by the sites, indicating a halt in operations. While visible activity above ground remains limited, the status of underground facilities is uncertain.
Notably, the Fordo enrichment facility, constructed underground, also appears inactive due to the extensive destruction caused by the strikes. Although Iran may aspire to rebuild its nuclear capabilities, achieving this would require considerable time, resources, and investment. The uncertainty surrounding the current status of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile further complicates assessments of the country’s nuclear ambitions.
