Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who rely on oil for heating are feeling the financial strain as fuel prices continue to rise. Jack Whelan from St. John’s expressed his concern as his heating bill reached about $900, with expectations of further increases. Walter Harding shared that it cost him around $2,000 to fill his tank, estimating a recent $500 spike in expenses.
Harding, in an effort to cut costs, has reduced his home temperature from 19°C to 16.5°C, opting for sweaters and leaving the oven door open after cooking to retain heat. He emphasized the significant impact of heating expenses, stating that a substantial portion of his monthly income goes towards fuel.
The price of furnace oil in the region ranged between $1.95 and $2.14 per liter, marking a 74 cents increase since January. The Public Utilities Board has implemented multiple fuel price adjustments this month due to market price fluctuations, resulting in significant volatility since early March. On Thursday, furnace oil prices were 70 cents higher compared to the same date last year.
Whalen highlighted the unpredictability of fuel prices, attributing the fluctuations to events in the Middle East. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran following U.S.-Israeli actions has contributed to the rapid escalation of fuel costs.
Seniors, particularly vulnerable to rising heating expenses, are finding it challenging to manage their bills. Sharron Callahan, Executive Director of the N.L. Public Sector Pensioners’ Association, noted the substantial increase in oil prices, making it difficult for seniors to cope. She mentioned various strategies seniors are employing, such as keeping homes cooler, wearing extra layers, and seeking alternative accommodations during winter months.
Both Callahan and Whalen emphasized the need for cost-cutting measures without compromising comfort, acknowledging the financial burden imposed by escalating heating costs on residents in the region.
