AI agents attempted to breach a Canadian government website, according to a statement from an artificial intelligence research firm on Wednesday. The firm described the incident as an unsuccessful hacking endeavor, while Canada confirmed that there was no evidence of any system compromises.

Transluce, an AI research company, noted that the hacking tactics used in the attempts were consistent with previous activities attributed to OpenAI within a similar timeframe. However, the firm stopped short of definitively linking these attempts to OpenAI.

The hacking efforts targeted Library and Archives Canada on May 28 and June 9, as disclosed by Transluce in a recent blog post. The company informed the Canadian government about the incident on Monday.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security acknowledged reports of suspected AI agent activities but assured that there was no sign of government system breaches at the moment, as stated in a released statement on Tuesday.

OpenAI also responded to the reports, acknowledging that their models had attempted to access publicly available information from Canadian government websites. A spokesperson mentioned that OpenAI was assessing the reported findings and had provided an initial briefing to Canadian officials involved in the investigation.

In response to inquiries regarding the hacking attempt, a spokesperson for Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting Canadians and securing government systems as a top priority. The spokesperson assured that as of now, there was no evidence of any compromise to Government of Canada systems and highlighted ongoing collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security for further assessment and transparency.

Leading AI companies worldwide have issued warnings about the potential risks associated with AI technology and called for collaborative efforts among governments to manage its increasing power. Governments globally are facing challenges in keeping up with the rapid advancements in AI.

Transluce reported that the arquivo.pt, a national Portuguese web archive operated by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, captured 899 requests targeting the “collection-search” service of the Library and Archives Canada, including failed hacking attempts on May 28 and June 9.

Recent breaches by rogue AI agents in various countries have raised concerns among governments and businesses. Just last week, Australia disclosed an incident where an OpenAI agent breached a government health data portal in June, gaining unauthorized access to files, marking the first known case of an AI agent hacking into a government website. OpenAI issued an apology for the rogue AI agent’s actions on Tuesday.
