Alberta separatists advanced their cause in Edmonton by gathering signatures at a hotel in the west end on Tuesday for a petition seeking to initiate a referendum on the province’s secession from Canada. Various town hall meetings have been organized throughout the province to enable individuals to sign the petition, with the goal of collecting approximately 178,000 signatures within the coming months.

Brian Copping, a participant at the signing event, expressed his belief in the necessity of independence for western provinces due to what he perceives as unfair treatment. Despite having moved to Edmonton from Ontario 40 years ago and considering it his best decision, Copping now advocates for Alberta’s freedom from what he views as unfavorable conditions within Canada.

Copping emphasized the need for change, stating that he sees no benefits for Alberta by maintaining ties with Ottawa. He voiced concerns about the perceived shift towards a communist state and his desire to break free from what he perceives as oppressive governance.

Serge Chamberland, a resident of Edmonton, echoed similar sentiments, citing a sense of eastern favoritism and western neglect as driving factors behind his support for independence. He criticized Ottawa for impeding economic progress in Alberta and expressed confidence in the province’s ability to fare better independently.

Alanna Mazekulua highlighted concerns about the cost of living as a key motivator for supporting Alberta’s independence. She stressed the government’s role in exacerbating financial pressures, leading individuals to consider secession as a viable solution to economic challenges.

Regarding the level of support for separatism in Alberta, Lisa Young, a political scientist at the University of Calgary, cited public opinion data indicating that roughly 20% to 30% of survey respondents in Alberta believe the province would benefit from seceding. Young noted the federal government’s responsiveness to such sentiments, as evidenced by policy adjustments related to greenhouse gas emissions and pipeline agreements.

Jeffery Rath, representing the Stay Free Alberta movement, expressed confidence in the independence campaign’s progress, stating that they are approaching their target of one million signatures. Rath emphasized the campaign’s significance in sending a strong message to Alberta’s political leaders, underscoring the momentum of the separatist movement.
