An extensive disruption at Amazon’s cloud computing service caused widespread app and website outages worldwide on Monday, impacting customers and businesses. Amazon Web Services confirmed that the disruption, which began early in the day, was resolved by Monday evening.

Amazon Web Services, known as AWS, is Amazon’s cloud services division that offers digital services to various entities, including companies, governments, and individuals. Shion Guha, a human-centered data science professor at the University of Toronto, highlighted that while Amazon is commonly associated with its online store and Prime Video, AWS is a significant revenue source for the company. Businesses utilize AWS for its network of servers and distributed software products to host websites and access computing power for data analysis purposes.

The outage on Monday morning affected prominent social media apps such as Snapchat and Reddit, as well as businesses globally. Gaming platforms like Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans were down, along with financial services like Venmo and Chime. Food delivery and rideshare apps, messaging app Signal, streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, video chat app Zoom, and Amazon’s own services were also impacted.

Canadian customers experienced various consequences due to the outage, including challenges with telecommunications operations and government agencies that rely on AWS services. The disruption led to difficulties in activities such as bill payments and license renewals. By early afternoon, Downdetector had received over 13 million reports related to the incident, including more than 351,000 from Canada.

The outage originated from a cluster of data centers in northern Virginia, specifically US-EAST-1, due to a Domain Name System (DNS) issue affecting AWS’s DynamoDB API. DNS translates IP addresses into domain names, enabling web users to access websites. This incident marked at least the third time in five years that AWS’s US-EAST-1 cluster contributed to a major internet outage. Following hours of disruptions, services gradually resumed in Canada before AWS officially resolved the issue by 6 p.m. ET.

Guha explained that the root cause of the problem could have been physical issues, software glitches, or security threats, necessitating a meticulous investigation and resolution process. Security expert Patrick Burgess stated that the outage appeared to be a technology-related issue rather than a cyberattack, emphasizing the established protocols for managing such disruptions at AWS and other cloud service providers.
