After over 20 years since the brutal murder of a senior citizen at a remote rest stop in northern British Columbia, an American individual has been brought to Canada to face trial. James Daniel Morgan, already serving time for a different killing in the U.S., made his first appearance in a B.C. courtroom to plead guilty to the first-degree murder charge of 74-year-old James Hamrick.

Hamrick was fatally attacked with two hammers outside his camper while traveling through Canada in September 2001. Offering Morgan a ride after seeing him hitchhiking, Hamrick tragically met his demise.

Extradited from a U.S. prison by RCMP officers, Morgan appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in Prince George, donning red prison attire and restraints, looking frail. He entered a plea deal, admitting guilt to manslaughter while denying first-degree murder, receiving credit for time served in the U.S.

Justice Ronald Tindale approved the plea deal, sentencing Morgan to one day in Canadian prison for Hamrick’s murder before returning him to the U.S. to complete his existing 48-year sentence for a Colorado homicide. With the Canadian legal proceedings concluded, Morgan will be eligible for parole in the U.S.

Court documents reviewed by CBC News detailed a complex narrative spanning nearly 25 years, linking two separate murders of elderly men in different countries, a decade apart. The tragic incident involving Hamrick left a lasting impact on his family and the community, causing fear among travelers in northern B.C.

Morgan’s confession to both Hamrick’s murder and another unsolved homicide in Denver, Colorado, further solidified his criminal history. Despite expressing remorse and cooperation in the legal process, Morgan’s actions have left a lasting scar on the victims’ families and the affected communities.
