ArcelorMittal Dofasco, a leading steelmaker, has announced the decommissioning of one of its remaining coke plants in Hamilton. The closure of the plant, known as the No. 3 Plant, is set to be finalized on April 13, marking the end of an era for the Cokemaking business unit. Company spokesperson Marie Verdun expressed gratitude towards the employees who have worked in the plant over the years, highlighting their expertise, resilience, and dedication.

Employees currently working at the coke plant will be transitioned to new roles within the company, although specific details regarding the number of employees affected or potential changes in compensation were not disclosed. ArcelorMittal Dofasco has been a prominent player in the steel industry in Hamilton for a considerable period.

Coke, a coal-derived fuel essential for steel production, is a significant source of emissions in the steelmaking process. As part of efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainability in steel production, some companies are adopting alternative methods such as using electric arc furnaces or shifting from coal to natural gas and hydrogen. ArcelorMittal Dofasco has opted to pursue the latter approach.

The decision to decommission the No. 3 coke plant follows the earlier closure of the No. 1 plant in 2015. The company’s long-term decarbonization goals align with government initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the steel sector.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath commended the closure of the No. 3 plant, emphasizing the positive impact on air quality and community well-being. The move signifies progress towards a more sustainable future and a modern, competitive steel industry. ArcelorMittal Dofasco remains committed to operating its No. 2 plant responsibly and complying with environmental regulations while pursuing its decarbonization objectives.
