After weeks of speculation, astronaut Mike Fincke, aged 58, has come forward as the individual who faced a medical emergency aboard the International Space Station last month, leading to NASA’s inaugural medical evacuation. In an official statement released by NASA, Fincke disclosed that on January 7, he encountered a medical event necessitating urgent assistance from his fellow crew members.

Despite not specifying the exact health issue that prompted the need for medical evacuation, Fincke assured that he is currently in good condition and undergoing post-flight reconditioning. He was a member of the SpaceX Crew-11 mission, alongside NASA astronaut Zena Cardman, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov.

The severity of the situation prompted the early termination of the mission to enable Fincke to receive comprehensive diagnostics and treatment on Earth, marking NASA’s first medical evacuation in 65 years of human spaceflight. As a result, the ISS was left with only three crew members – one American and two Russians – leading to the suspension of spacewalks and research activities until a replacement team was launched.

While NASA refrained from disclosing the specific astronaut affected or the nature of the health issue, citing medical confidentiality, Fincke expressed gratitude towards his crew members for their support and the healthcare professionals in San Diego, where the crew safely landed on January 15. Reflecting on the experience, Fincke acknowledged the humbling reminder of the human aspects of spaceflight.

During a press briefing following their return to Earth, Fincke mentioned utilizing the onboard ultrasound machine, a standard equipment for monitoring physiological changes in weightlessness, to address the medical emergency effectively. He emphasized the utility of the ultrasound machine in such situations, advocating for its inclusion in all future space missions for its crucial role in aiding medical emergencies.
