“Aysanabee’s Headlining Tour Spotlights Indigenous Artists”

As Aysanabee, a musician, received the award for the best alternative album at the Junos in Halifax last year, memories of his final conversation with his late grandfather in May 2023 came flooding back. His grandfather’s advice was simple yet impactful: “Do what you say you’re going to do.” Inspired by these words, Aysanabee made a commitment to the audience to remove barriers and bring them along on his journey.

Today, Aysanabee is embarking on his first headlining tour, with upcoming shows scheduled across Eastern Canada, including seven performances in Nova Scotia. To support fellow musicians, he is featuring various Indigenous artists as opening acts, actively promoting them on his social media platforms. Aysanabee aims to create a supportive music community where mutual upliftment is encouraged.

To apply for opening slots, individuals are requested to email a performance video, even if it’s just a phone recording, along with their preferred show choices and a brief statement on their musical aspirations. Aysanabee emphasizes that even if current slots are filled, there may be future opportunities available.

DeeDee Austin, a Mi’kmaw artist from Fall River, N.S., and a member of the Abegweit First Nation, will open four shows in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. She commends Aysanabee for shining a spotlight on emerging Indigenous talents, recognizing the value of exposure for artists breaking into the industry.

Another opener, Mi’kmaw musician Emma Stevens from Eskasoni First Nation, hopes to broaden her audience beyond the East Coast through this platform. The collaboration between artists like Aysanabee, DeeDee Austin, and Emma Stevens fosters a sense of unity and mutual appreciation within the music industry.

Aysanabee draws inspiration from his past experiences opening for renowned artists like Dan Mangan and Allison Russell. He emphasizes the significance of supporting opening acts and encourages audiences not to miss out on these performances. The ethos of paying it forward, instilled by his mentors, drives Aysanabee’s mission to uplift and empower emerging talents in the music scene.
