A recent finding in Australia’s tropical rainforests has amazed scientists with a spider’s unique hunting method of propelling prey through the air using a spring-loaded silk trap. The discovery, detailed in a study published in Current Biology, unveils how this small arachnid constructs a cone-shaped snare to launch green tree ants into its web, earning it the moniker “ballista spider.”

Biologist Ajay Narendra, a lead researcher from Macquarie University in Australia, expressed awe at witnessing the spider’s behavior firsthand. The spider, belonging to the Propostira genus and yet to be formally named, was first observed by researcher Greg Anderson in 2022 in a remote rainforest in Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula.

The spider’s nocturnal nature involves hiding under leaves during the day and crafting intricate traps under the cover of darkness. Using high-speed cameras, the team captured the spiders’ rapid hunting technique, which involves the ant getting ensnared in the silk trap and then launched into the air, landing in the waiting predator’s web.

The green tree ants are lured to the trap within minutes of the final silk layer being set, indicating a potential pheromone attraction specific to these ants. The evolutionary strategy of targeting the formidable green tree ants without direct confrontation showcases the spider’s adaptation for efficient hunting.

Further research will focus on analyzing the spider silk to identify potential pheromones responsible for the specialized prey attraction. The study sheds light on the remarkable capabilities of the ballista spider and underscores the ongoing discoveries in nature that continue to captivate researchers worldwide.
