B.C. officials have reported that initial assessments indicate no contamination exceeding drinking water standards following the leakage of 80,000 liters of fuel into Kamloops Lake due to a recent train derailment. The incident involving a Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) train occurred last weekend, resulting in approximately 80,700 liters of aviation fuel spilling into the lake after 17 rail cars derailed.
Communities relying on the lake for their water supply, such as Savona, Tobiano, and Walhachin, expressed immediate concerns. However, subsequent water sample tests revealed no direct impact on drinking water quality in Savona, where around 700 residents reside.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is awaiting further test results and will update Walhachin residents accordingly, emphasizing the low risk to the local water system. Recent water samples from the area did not detect any levels above safety thresholds for drinking water or aquatic life.
Efforts to mitigate the spill’s environmental impact are underway, with specialists working to remove jet fuel from the water and extract a train car that veered off the tracks. Additionally, deceased birds found near the lake, including Canada geese, are undergoing necropsies to determine if their deaths are linked to the fuel spill.
Containment measures, including the deployment of a boom to contain visible oil sheens, have been implemented by the B.C. Environment Ministry. Surveillance flights have confirmed minimal fuel presence outside the containment area, with ongoing water sampling indicating levels below provincial guidelines.
Private water operators drawing water from Kamloops Lake, notably in Tobiano, have been advised to engage in thorough inspections, as highlighted by Bluestem Utilities. Health authorities have cautioned against using lake water in certain areas, emphasizing the need to safeguard private water systems from potential fuel contamination.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation, with CPKC actively working to remove remaining rail cars from the site. Environmental experts stress the importance of continued monitoring to assess any downstream effects of the fuel spill and underscore the vulnerability of the local ecosystem to such accidents.
