“Behchokǫ̀ Community Introduces New Housing Units”

The public housing waiting list in Behchokǫ̀, N.W.T. is anticipated to shorten next month with the introduction of multiple housing units. The community has unveiled three new buildings, each tailored to cater to specific housing needs. One duplex, featuring two bachelor units, is designated for single individuals. Another duplex, comprising two two-bedroom units, is intended for seniors. The third building, housing two multi-bedroom units, will accommodate families.

Monfwi MLA Jane Weyallon Armstrong expressed her satisfaction at the impending occupancy of the units but highlighted the pressing need for more housing. She emphasized that the current housing shortage is a crisis not only in Behchokǫ̀ but also in neighboring areas such as Whatì, Gamètì, and Wekweètì.

The allocation of the units will prioritize individuals at the top of the public housing waiting list, which is determined through a point-based system. Lillian Erasmus, the housing manager for Behchokǫ̀ Ko Gha K’aodee, mentioned that the community’s waiting list, estimated to include around 160 to 180 people or 135 families according to the N.W.T. housing minister, has been steadily expanding.

Bronwyn Rorke, the manager of capital planning and design at Housing NWT, highlighted how seniors contributed feedback that influenced the design of their living spaces, ensuring features like spacious kitchens and ample storage. Additionally, the units were designed with accessibility in mind, including provisions for wheelchair ramps.

Territorial Housing Minister Lucy Kuptana emphasized the collaboration between Housing NWT and the Tłı̨chÇ« Investment Corporation in developing the seniors’ and bachelor units. Kuptana acknowledged the ongoing need for more housing while commending the progress made. She also lauded Weyallon Armstrong for her unwavering commitment to addressing the housing challenges in her constituency.

The modular units were transported by road in late July and assembled over the fall. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Feb. 21, with expectations for tenants to occupy the units in the coming month.
