A well-known medical manufacturing company in Kanata is currently in the process of surrendering its nuclear license following a violation of the license terms, as confirmed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Best Theratronics is working on transferring the nuclear material used for producing cancer treatment devices.
The CNSC’s Andrew McAllister announced that Best Theratronics Limited has acquired export licenses for shipping its Cobalt 60 and Cesium 137 sealed sources. Formerly a government agency that developed the world’s first cancer treatment machine, Best Theratronics has faced financial challenges since being acquired by overseas businessman Krishnan Suthanthiran.
Suthanthiran reported significant financial losses since purchasing the company in 2007 from MDS Nordion. The company experienced a prolonged labor dispute lasting nearly 10 months due to worker demands for improved wages. Following the lapse of its financial guarantee, the CNSC issued directives against Best Theratronics in November, requiring a $1.8 million provision for potential cleanup expenses upon site decommissioning.
Despite the CNSC’s orders, Suthanthiran did not comply, citing financial constraints and disputing the regulator’s actions. Consequently, he decided to relinquish the nuclear license and transition the company away from nuclear-related activities to comply with regulations.
When questioned about the impact on Best Theratronics employees due to the license surrender, Suthanthiran revealed plans to relocate to the USA and India, leading to the loss of 200 high-tech jobs. He highlighted the substantial annual cost associated with maintaining the nuclear license as a contributing factor to the decision.
Best Theratronics is obligated by the CNSC to provide regular progress reports on the nuclear material transfer process. The company missed its December reporting deadline, attributing the delay to Suthanthiran’s unavailability during that period. A preliminary plan for decommissioning the Kanata plant is due from Best Theratronics by the upcoming Tuesday deadline.
