The Canadian federal government has allocated $228.8 million for a three-year initiative to assist workers in Ontario industries affected by U.S. tariffs in acquiring new skills and adjusting to trade disruptions. The Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response aims to aid employees and job seekers in sectors such as softwood lumber, steel, and automotive industries, which continue to face substantial tariffs from the United States. Additionally, individuals in sectors indirectly impacted by tariffs can also benefit from the training and employment services provided.
Approximately 27,000 workers in Ontario are expected to receive training and support through this program, as estimated by Ottawa. Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu unveiled the funding alongside Ontario’s David Piccini at Parliament Hill. Furthermore, an additional $94.5 million will be allocated over five years to enhance data sharing concerning job opportunities in key sectors.
