After facing a 15-hour wait in the emergency department to refill her prescriptions due to the absence of a family doctor, Yvette Jarvis opted to seek care from a nurse practitioner (NP) instead. Over five years, she spent close to $2,500 for the same services. Jarvis, a St. John’s resident, praised the excellent primary care she received from the NP but expressed her desire for these services to be universally accessible without any out-of-pocket expenses.
Relief is on the horizon for Jarvis and residents across most of Canada as they will be able to consult publicly funded NPs for services typically provided by physicians starting this Wednesday. In January 2025, the federal government mandated that provincial and territorial health plans should cover the services of nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and midwives offering primary care by April 1, 2026, with enforcement measures to follow.
Despite Ontario’s anticipated delay in meeting the April 1 deadline, Health Minister Sylvia Jones confirmed compliance by 2027 to avoid federal penalties. The province boasts several publicly funded NP-led clinics, advocating for a model akin to other provinces where NPs are salaried by the government.
Jarvis highlighted the convenience of accessing the NP despite her irregular work schedule, emphasizing the importance of ongoing treatments and yearly check-ups. The imminent change is welcomed not only by patients but also by healthcare providers like Trent McDonald, who anticipates the opportunity to expand his practice and offer comprehensive care to more patients.
